Consider a Plumbing Inspection Before Buying or Remodeling

Buying a home or planning a remodel in Los Angeles is an exciting milestone, but before you sign the dotted line or knock down any walls, there’s one crucial step you shouldn’t overlook: a professional plumbing inspection. While structural issues often take the spotlight, plumbing problems can be equally costly if left unchecked. Here’s why a thorough inspection is a smart investment.

1. Uncover Hidden Issues in Older Homes

West Los Angeles is home to many beautiful, older properties that often come with character—and aging plumbing systems. Rusty pipes, outdated materials like galvanized steel, or invasive tree roots can create issues that aren’t visible during a standard home tour. A professional plumber can detect potential problems and give you peace of mind before you commit to a purchase or renovation.

2. Avoid Costly Surprises Post-Remodel

Remodeling your home is a big undertaking, and the last thing you want is to discover a hidden plumbing disaster mid-project. A pre-remodel inspection can help identify if pipes need to be updated or rerouted and whether your current plumbing system can handle new fixtures or appliances. Avoiding unplanned plumbing fixes keeps your remodel on budget and on schedule.

3. Check for Water Pressure and Flow Issues

Low water pressure can be more than a nuisance—it’s often a symptom of a larger problem, such as pipe corrosion or a hidden leak. During a plumbing inspection, our expert plumbers can assess your home’s water pressure and pinpoint any underlying issues. Ensuring good flow now can save you from bigger headaches later.

4. Identify Sewer Line Problems Before They Escalate

Sewer line issues are serious and can lead to messy and expensive repairs if not caught early. A thorough inspection, which may include a camera inspection of your sewer line, can detect blockages, cracks, or tree root intrusions. Knowing the state of your sewer line helps you make informed decisions about repairs or maintenance.

5. Ensure Your Plumbing Is Up to Code

Building codes change over time, and older homes may not meet current regulations. A plumbing inspection can reveal if any components of your system are out of compliance, ensuring safety and potentially saving you from fines or additional work down the road. This is especially important when adding new plumbing features as part of a remodel.

Why Choose Santa Monica Drain Co for Your Plumbing Inspection?

Our licensed and experienced plumbers specialize in detailed inspections, ensuring you have a complete picture of your home’s plumbing system. Whether you’re buying, selling, or renovating, we’ll provide a thorough assessment and expert recommendations.

Schedule Your Inspection Today

Don’t let hidden plumbing problems derail your plans. Call Santa Monica Drain Co at 310-422-8915 to schedule your comprehensive plumbing inspection in West Los Angeles. We’re here to make sure your home is ready for whatever comes next.

3. Unusual Smells in Your Home

Replacing a Gas Yard Line in Pacific Palisades – Gas Line Repair

This week was a busy one over at Santa Monica Drain Co! We were hard at work replacing a gas line in the Palisades Riviera. Our client, a long time friend of Oliver's, had noticed the smell of natural gas near his mailbox. He didn't think much of it until the heavy rains came last week, and his stove was suddenly unable to hold a steady flame. Finally, when his gas heat and water heater stopped working he knew that something was seriously wrong.

Thankfully, he gave Santa Monica Drain Co a call and we were able to get started right away looking for the root cause of these problems. It wasn't long before we identified the culprit – a 70 year old gas line that was crumbling away in the ground. Cracks lined the old galvanized pipe, allowing the gas to escape out, leading to the smell that our client was picking up near the mailbox. As the water seeped into these cracks, it lead to the flickering flame he was experiencing at the stove, and eventually to the total loss of gas pressure in his home.

Major leak discovered in old gas line!

We immediately called in our crew to get started on a replacement. Having no natural gas to your home is a major headache and we didn't want to leave him without for any longer than necessary. In one day, we had the entire 75 foot trench neatly dug from his home , down the hill, and to the street. We carefully preserved slices of sod, and avoided most of the landscaping so we could leave no trace of the major work being done.

Next we pulled out the big guns, bringing in nearly 100 feet of new polyethylene yellow gas pipe that is more resistant to wear and tear from water and ground movement that we are all too familiar with here in California. Using a technique called socket fusion, we were able to run one continuous piece of pipe from start to finish, eliminating the risk of weakening at any underground joints.

To wrap things up, we hard piped into the house using a protected metal pipe. We then filled in all of our trenches and re-covered them with sod.

Working together to socket fuse the pipe

Looking from the street, you would never guess at the major work that was done to this home's gas line and that's just the way we like it! Gas is back on, and everybody's happy!

If you are having similar issues with you home's gas service, give Santa Monica Drain Co a call. We work all over the westside and can have most new gas lines up and running in 48 hours or less. 310-422-8915
